Ruth Toor was an elementary school library media specialist for 29 years and is now a library consultant, speaker, author of eleven professional books, and co- editor of the School Librarian’s Workshop since its start 25 years ago.
Some highlights of her career include:
- President of the American Association of School Librarians
- Representative to the National Forum for History Standards, the National Social Studies, and English/Language Arts Standards
- Member of Implementation Committee for Information Power
- Four year term on American Library Association’s Council
- Member of Association for Library Service to Children’s Caldecott Committee
- Speaker at national conferences, giving keynotes for library associations, and presenting (and still doing) programs, seminars, and workshops for media specialists, teachers and administrators in 22 states
- President of Educational Media Association of NJ, receiving its President’s Award and lifetime membership for her “outstanding service to school library programs”
- Selected for its Alumni Wall of Fame by the University of Delaware from which she received her BA
Recent activities include:
- Current member, ALA Committee on Legislation, AASL International Relations Committee, and ALSC Legislative Committee
- Recent Chair, AASL Nominating and Conference Committees and ALA Mary V. Gaver Scholarship Jury
- Member, AASL National School Library Media Program of the Year Committee
- Currently Internship Adviser for Professional Development Studies at Rutgers SCILS where she earned her MLS
She and her husband Jay love jazz, the theater, books, and travel, including visits to their two sons and four grandchildren.
