Research as a Basis for Enhancing Learning for K-12 Studentsin Impoverished Communities in New Jersey

The Rutgers University President’s Program for Research in Service to New Jersey Award 2005-2006

Objective: The objective of the project was to apply research to reveal the positive ways that school library media specialists and the school library media programs impact student learning in Abbot Districts; thus enabling these students in grades K – 12 to meet curriculum standards and test score expectations.

Program: One day workshop Research to Reality: Helping School Libraries Enhance Student Learning, held November 21, 2005. The aim of the workshop was to explore ways to enhance and enrich student learning experiences through the development of instructional interventions centered on guided inquiry; thus enabling students to integrate diverse and complex sources of information and build deep knowledge and deep understanding. A secondary aim was to raise awareness of student learning in school libraries in information age schools.

Action Plan: An action emerged out of the workshop. The action plan defines key actions that should be taken to improve student learning through school library media centers. These actions focus on enhancing student achievement, meeting curriculum standards, and preparing students to live and work in an information rich society.
